Lately, and countless times in ages past, have we thought ‘is this the end times?’ Friends and acquaintances have asked me that question -and my response is always ‘we could be.’ Not a very decisive answer, not the answer most want to hear, but its the truth. I quantify my answer by;
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only “
This was part of the answer Jesus gave to his disciples, when they asked him about the end times. He expounded a number of other things that would come to pass as well and conditions that would be similar to the days of Noah.
Why is Mathew 24:36 not a conclusive answer to the question of when the end times will come? We read “no one knows,” yet we are consumed with trying to figure out the when. We search out the signs of the end times in both the Old and New Testaments and try to compare them to today’s events. Whenever something traumatic in the world happens we rush back to the clues of the end times described in the Bible to see if this is finally it. Why is that?
The recent events; Covid-19, and civil unrest have brought the contemplation of the end times front and center yet again. Surely this must be it.
Do you think we are the first generation of people that have considered recent events the end times? No we are not, and we may not be the last. Just after the Lord’s ascension, the Apostles believed the end could come in their lifetime. Those who suffered and died during the black plague of the dark ages must have felt the end was near. But it wasn’t. World War I was referred to as the ‘war to end all wars,’ yet it wasn’t.
While countless lessons can be gleaned from the end times prophecy, I would like to address but two. First, and briefly, I think the reason Christians in general want to try to figure out when the end times will happen, is they want to be ready for Christ’s return. While that is an important reason, and its always best to be prepared -my question is why are you not ready now?
The likelihood you and I will meet our individual end time, by illness, accident, etc. is far more likely than the second coming. So, again, I ask, why are you not ready to meet your maker now? Do you think by figuring out the exact interpretation of the end time prophecy, and the timeline, it will make you any more ready than you are right now? Do you not believe “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”
My second point has to do more with the christian community as a whole. When confronted with evil you have two choices, fight or flight. How is it that so many Christians have chosen the later -flight. As you read this, doubtless there are those who rush to defend their cowardice by quoting “turn the other cheek.” Turn the other cheek does not mean run and hide. You have to be there, taking a stand before you ever get to ‘turn the other cheek.’
Our country is in the condition it is today, because we have allowed evil to triumph over the good by doing nothing, by keeping quiet, by hiding in the hope of the second coming. The time of the silent majority is over. Our faith must be loud and clear. The time of the closet christian is past.
Throughout history, groups of Christians have separated themselves from the rest of humanity in an effort to live in peace, and every time, without exception, they have failed. They have succumbed to, or been destroyed by evil, without a fight. Too many christian cowards have sought refuge in prophecy, hoping that the end would come, they would be rescued from the evil world, and justice would finally prevail. Will the United States be next?
Another scripture Christian cowards use in their own defense; “the meek shall inherit the earth.” While that is true, being meek is not the same thing as being a coward. One can be meek, but strong in faith, strong in courage. We can, and must be courageous in our faith. We must not run, we must not hide, we must confront evil with faith.
To assume that if we hide from those who would seek to destroy our way of life, and the Lord will swoop in to save us in our cowardice, is folly. If you are happy with the life you’ve earned by hard work, and want to preserve it, you must fight for it. How can you possibly hope to have the means to help others if all that you have is taken away? Why is it those who seek to destroy our country are bolder in their speech and actions than those of faith? Answer; too many christian cowards.
Stop hiding, take a stand, let your stand be known. Call out those who lie, deceive and destroy. Do what is required to preserve the good and thwart the evil. So what if you are ostracized, ridiculed, and abused. We have allowed evil to reach the point, where we cannot say what we think, without the fear of loosing our jobs. What happened to free speech? What happened to the triumph of truth? We have allowed it to be replaced with political correctness. Support hose people and businesses who have the courage to stand up for the truth, come to their aid, support their efforts.
What is more important than your relationship with God? The time is past for the ‘can’t we all just get along’ attitude. There is no middle ground. We have heard it said far too many times, ‘the world is going to hell,’ well perhaps it has, but we have let it go to hell. How sad is cowardice? We see video after video of people, their lives, and livelihoods being destroyed by evil, while cowards, who think it is more important to take a picture with their phone than it is to help their fellow man, do nothing.
What can you do? To start with, let people know you stand for good and not evil in word and deed. If they shun you so be it, but call them out. Defend your family, defend your way of life. You worked hard for it, it is by God’s grace you have it, will you just allow it to be taken away without a fight? Lawlessness is not godliness, its godlessness. Your place in the fight of good over evil may be different than mine, but find your place, take it in meekness, by faith, and courage.
Have you ever seen how quickly a hornworm can destroy a tomato plant? Image that plant is your way of life, and the hornworm is the evil destroying it. Will you just allow its destruction to continue? Will you take a video of it? Or will you stop the destruction? Stop hiding in prophecy, be strong now, today. It’s a wonderful thing to have the faith and expectation of a new world, one of peace and safety, but how will you answer God when you are called to explain you had a place of peace and safety, but allowed it to be destroyed because of your cowardice? “To whom much is given, much is expected.”
I will leave you with this as a place for a new start; you have read it, and heard it said countless times ‘pray for our nation.’ What is your response to ‘pray for our nation,’ do you do it, or is it just lip-service? Yesterday, how long did you ‘pray for our nation?’ One hour? Five minutes? 60 seconds? Would you be willing to confess to others just how much time you spent yesterday ‘praying for our nation?’
If you want to find your place in the fight for good, if you want to find the courage to take a stand for good, then take a knee in prayer. Make the time and make a difference.
If called to action, will this be your answer:
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”
